Heart Disease: First Canadian survey shows women unaware of symptoms and risk factors

OTTAWA, July 21, 2014 – A new survey, ordered by the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, shows that a majority of Canadian women lack knowledge of heart disease symptoms and risk factors, and that a significant proportion is even unaware of their own risk status. 24 Hour Urinary Sodium Excretion Survey: The PURE Sodium Sentinel Sites Study (24USE)

Project Background

Sodium intake is related to the development of hypertension a frequent major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and to other morbidities. A population preventative approach to reducing salt intake should be based upon sound data on sodium levels from urinary excretion in a large sample. Such a study does not exist in Canada but has been conducted successfully in the UK and Finland.
